Body Modifications - breather
The body was modified in two areas; the rear belly pan needed an opening for our new exhaust system. The second modification was to the deck lid. We wanted the engine to breath cool air freely, so we designed a cold air induction system as well as making room for a proper breather.
The first part of the deck modification was to design an air breather because we could find nothing on the market that would work in our application. Once done, we could start modifying the deck lid.
After many measurements with the hood both on and off, we mocked up the breather you see on the left. Using a K&N filter we built an accurate mock-up out of foam core. We then brought this assembly to our local metal fabricator to be built out of 1/8" aluminum plate.
When we picked up the breather from the fabricator and tried it on for size it fit perfectly. Now was the time to cut a hole through the deck lid so the breather would fit through and allow cold air in. We had to be very accurate here, as we wanted the breather to seal against the existing deck lid. Many measurements later a hole was scribed onto the deck lid and the hole was cut out with a rotary cutting tool.
Before moving onto the next step there was a gap between the deck lid liner and the outer skin that had to be dealt with. To finish off the inside of the deck lid we fibreglassed the two sides together around the perimeter of the breather.
