Body Modifications
- scoop
The next task was to build
a scoop onto the existing deck lid. Again the tape measure came out as
we built a rough frame from plywood, cutting the contours of the existing
deck lid into the bottom side of it. We filled the rough frame with foam
and let it cure.
This would form the basis of new scoop. The mold
was sculpted to the desired shape constantly checking for symmetry and
then finally smoothed out with coarse sandpaper. It was then covered with
a release agent (duct tape) and the first layer of fibreglass was laid
down. After the fibreglass cured we trial-fit the beginnings of the new
scoop to the deck lid. After more fitting, trimming and adjusting the
scoop lined up nicely with existing lines of the deck lid. After we positioned
the scoop we added three more layers of fibreglass.
The paint was ground away around and underneath
the scoop position on the existing deck lid. A layer of fibreglass and
resin were laid down onto the deck lid and the scoop was set in position
and temporarily screwed into place until the resin cured. Once the glass
had cured more layers were laid down around the edges of the scoop and
the screws removed.
The belly pan was treated in much the same way.
The exhaust channels in the original were filled with foam and sculpted
following the existing lines. The release agent was laid down with a layer
of fibreglass on top. Once the fibreglass set up the backside of the channels
were cut away and the foam pulled out.
The centre opening for the exhaust in the grill
was formed with cardboard and plastic, again duct taped and then fibreglassed.
Once a basic shape was there it was merely a case of building onto it
with fibreglass and then sanding and grinding away the excess until the
final shape emerged.
