Sanding, sanding
and more sanding
Once
the body modifications were done it was time to start prepping the rest
of the car for paint. All parts that could be removed were and they were
sanded and prepped separately. Starting with 320 grit wet sand paper we
blocked sanded the entire surface of the car and then washed it down.
This process took place several times with 320 grit wet sandpaper. The
same process was performed with 400 grit wet sand paper.
Once
we could clearly identify any body surface imperfections, very thin layers
of body putty were used to correct the surface flaws. The entire surface
of the car was sanded again.
Then
a few coats of primer were applied to areas with raw fibreglass showing
through. Again the car was block sanded with 400 grit. This process continued
until we were satisfied that we removed all of the surface flaws.
The
car parts necessary for legal driving were re-installed and the car was
driven to the paint shop. Engine, interior, windows, under the hood etc.
were masked.
Four
coats of black urethane were sprayed on and drips runs etc. were sanded
off. We picked up the car, re-assembled it to a legal driving condition,
loaded up the rest of the painted parts and returned to our garage for
more wet sanding.
After
paint the sanding began with 1500 grit and was block sanded several times,
washing between each session. The procedure was repeated with 2000 grit
sand paper. Once sanding was complete, the car was re-assembled again
and sent back to paint shop for buffing and polishing.
